Full -time:
- After 3-5 years of experience in the industry.
- Full-time is more valuable especially when looking to switch industries if done from a top and branded school/university
- If you do full-time MBA, then you’ll lose the income for roughly 2 years + pay the expenses which for a top school come around ~$100×2 + ~$100×2=~$400K
- So, in short, the total opportunity cost for full-time MBA is close to $300-400K.
Part-time:
- It is good for getting a bump in the career possibly in similar industry or within your current organization
- Positive side to this is you’ll be working full-time while getting this MBA hence your expenses are nearly ~$75×2=~$150K vs $400K for a full-time MBA
- In addition, for part-time you can spread the course over a period of 5 years vs in full-time where you must complete the course within about 2 years
- The advantage here is that you can still gain both the experience and money for not quitting your job unlike in full-time MBA
- Degree from a top school might still be able to help you if you want to switch to a different industry
Note: Cost for an average MBA is about $50-75K per year or $100-150K for the whole course.
Different career opportunities with an MBA degree: –
Management consultant: Starting salary after MBA is could be in six figures depending on where you join and which school you graduate from. You can become a Principal working your way up and you may be able to earn in millions.
Finance manager: Starting salary could be in six figures. You can choose to be in different roles in different industries depending on where you want to go and there is a significant growth opportunity both in ranks and salary in this area
Marketing and strategy manager: You can take the roles of product manager or product marketing manager. These are all hot areas for career growth. These roles have direct interaction with customers, sales, business development, engineering or product development teams and there is a huge potential for growth.
Entrepreneur: You may choose to open your own start-up with an innovative idea, get it funded (self or otherwise) and gradually grow the size and market presence. Sky is the limit here, but this requires extreme level of tenacity and there is huge amount of uncertainty too. So, if you’re ready to take that risk then this could be your potential career direction
