Public or private university educational costs

Public colleges and universities in the United States are operated by government entities, usually at the state and county level. Each state has its own system of higher education funded by residents through taxes. Public universities are comparatively less expensive for the residents of the state where the university is located. But if you are not a resident of the state, you will pay out-of-state costs, which are often higher.

Private universities are not government owned and operated; they are not obligated to make accommodations for students based on residency. Private universities are often mission driven. They derive their funding from tuition and fundraising efforts and sometimes offer different forms of merit-based financial aid.

However, the scope of funding is limited, and one must be prepared to pay on his/her own based on self-pay or through any form of educational loans available. Nevertheless, those who are smart and ready to work hard, they tend to recover that money after few years of graduating with the degree by earning the money from a job in the industry.

Tuition costs: Cost of tuition per year on average is ~ $25K to $40K depending on the school/university.

Cost of living: (lodging + food) ~$500-1K per month when shared with others.

On-off campus jobs: Some people apply for on-campus or off-campus jobs and based on merit may earn $500-2K per month.

Summer internship: There are some summer internships available in various companies. Those who work hard to secure internships, may be able to earn $1.5-3K per month during the summer months which is generally 3-4month period.

Possibly find OPT (optional practical training) or CPT (curricular practical training) for 6months-1year (you can earn ~$3-5K per month, so for 6months ~$18K-30K & for 1 year ~$36K – 60K). There may be a possibility for extension of OPT/CPT for 2-3 years (check the latest rules and regulations). Finally, your CPT/OPT can get converted to full time employment with the same or a new employer. For this matter talk to your office of admissions.
